Set-Up Personnel

Set-up personnel prepare the machines in the extension, compression, and torsion (coiling) departments so they can produce conforming springs. Working from the work order and controlled print, the set-up technician selects the correct material, removes and cleans prior tooling, and installs and adjusts all tooling required for the part — arbors, coiling points, cutters, feed rolls, cams, and sensors.

They program the machine, synchronize the second former and timing, and set the in-line oven. Before releasing the machine, they inspect first parts to the drawing, submit samples and work order to quality control for approval, make any adjustments QC requires, and run production to verify set-up integrity. The set-up person remains available to support the operator on questions about the set-up.

Operator

Operators run the coiling machinery once set-up is released, keeping parts conforming to the current print at their work center. Their day-to-day work includes maintaining tooling for the part number, sharpening cutters, making mechanical or computer adjustments, changing wire as needed, and packing and weighing boxes, barrels, or tubs.

Operators inspect and record all required dimensional results per the in-process sheets, pack parts and apply labels per the work order, and identify and move labeled conforming product to the next operation. Unlabeled completed work must carry a move ticket or the work order, and any nonconforming parts are recorded and relocated per the nonconforming material procedure.
